2012 Quarter One Reflection: Running a Successful Team

2012 Quarter One Reflection
By Mike Revelle

2011 was one of the most successful years to date for the team In terms of marketability, events attended, and team performance. But the team that was started nearly 5 years ago was beginning to out grow the systems and management structure that hasn’t been revamped in quite a bit of time.

When the 2011 off season hit, the team started to see the foundation crumble as we transitioned from a “club sport” to a professional entity. Having big goals and big aspirations means you need an extremely stronger foundation where nothing, whether inside or outside of the team can damage it.

Throughout the off season, myself and our current staff of Nathan Avelar and Paul Christopher took to the drawing board as we challenging ourselves to rebuild how Brute Force functions. We developed a strong and secure management system that reflected a professional sports team much like the NFL or MLB, and drafted player contracts that not only put the best interest of the team forward but gave flexibility and incentive to those who agreed to sign it.

What’s it Like to Get Hit?

What’s it Like to Get Hit?
By: Bryce McCarthy

The other day, I was reffing a birthday party for a first-time player, Matt, who was no older than eleven. As we trekked out to the field for his first ever game of paintball, he asked the typical “What’s it like to get hit?”

Usually, I brush this question off with “It stings for a moment, but it goes away really soon” and sometimes I joke “I can show you, if you want,” to ease their nerves. But, for some reason, maybe because he reminded me so much of myself at his age, I took a retrospective journey back to my first time getting hit by a paintball.

It was sometime around my 10th birthday. My dad bought me a Tippmann 98 Custom, a mask, and a pair of hiking boots. He brought me to the field, and even stayed to be my “pit crew” for the day. I listened to my first orientation, was sorted into my first team, and guided out to my first game.

Sportsmanship, Reflecting on the NPPL Incident

Sportsmanship
By Mike Revelle

Considering the National Professional Paintball Leagues tournament this past week, (and regardless of who was right or wrong) at the conclusion of the 1st/2nd place game where XSV beat out Tampa Bay Damage for first place, an undesirable act occurred where after the final game ending buzzer went off, players intentionally continued to shoot – completely disregarding safety and game rules.

This type of act happens inside the woods a lot. Paintball is an incredibly competitive sport where sometimes winning is the only option people care about, and unfortunately when they lose, all that pent up aggression comes out as some extremely undesirable acts.
